Our Challenge - a new roof to safeguard our Village heritage
For many years, significant sums of money have been - and are being spent - reacting to leaks and general roof issues as they’ve arisen. This is a costly and unsustainable exercise in the long term, and it does not sufficiently preserve the Church building’s long-term integrity. In short, our Church needs a new roof to safeguard the future of its infrastructure. Therefore, the Trustees of the Broad Hinton Church Trust Fund (The Trust) are starting a proactive initiative to raise £500,000 to sustain the Church Building for our future generations.
We have had a quote to replace the roof for approximately £250,000 but this assumes we will find no issues with the wooden framework and that all tiles will be reuseable. To be realistic, we believe we need to set our sights higher.
Why has the roof decayed?
It is believed that the current roof has been in place since the mid 19th Century, so you’ll understand that it now requires some urgent care and attention, having weathered over 150 years of our fine English seasons.
The stone slates are a natural product that have over time, under frosty and wet conditions, gradually delaminated. Also, they are held in place by oak pegs which have gradually rotted. This means that over much of the roof area, which to the naked eye looks solid, the stones are insecure and liable to move causing water ingress and leakage.
Without URGENT ACTION, we could lose this Jewel in the heart of our community
